Moen Lake Loon Volunteers

Gary and Judy Berweger have been Loon Rangers (LoonWatch) and Loon Citizen Scientists (Northwoods Loon Protection Program) on Moen Lake, Oneida County, Wisconsin since 2008. We monitor loon activity from spring through late fall and report our findings to LoonWatch and NLPP. We monitor for territorial pair(s), loners, and annual chick hatch and survival. We also try to determine if a loon has color-coded leg bands. NLPP places colored leg bands on loons to follow migration and territorial activities from year to year.

Stacy Craig, program director for LoonWatch, says loons are not only essential characters on Northern Wisconsin lakes, they are also an ideal indicator species for lake health, part of the reason LoonWatch and Loon Rangers work so hard to document them. Check out the About LoonWatch and About NLPP pages to find out more about these volunteer programs.

Although we are monitoring Moen lake loons, we have found that the Moen territorial pair are nesting on Sunset lake and flying and/or swimming to Moen, 2nd and 3rd lakes, and possibly other nearby lakes. We would love to see more volunteers trained to help us monitor all of  the lakes on the chain.

Training sessions are posted on the LoonWatch blog.

We know that many of our lake chain residents and visitors have unique loon stories, observations, and pictures. If you wish to share them, please send them to Gary at moenlakeloons@charter.net .
